Solar Savings Calculator | Estimate Solar Energy Savings

Solar Savings Calculator

Estimate how much electricity your solar system could offset each year and the approximate annual value of that energy. Adjust the assumptions to match your home and utility plan.

Your estimate will appear here.

This is a planning model. Actual savings depend on production, hourly usage, utility rates, fixed charges, export compensation, system degradation and other factors.

How this solar savings calculator works

The calculator estimates annual solar production from system size and an assumed production factor. It then separates the estimated production between energy used in the home and energy exported to the grid. Electricity used directly is valued at the assumed grid electricity price, while exported electricity is valued at the separate export rate.

Why self-consumption matters

Two homes with identical solar systems can have different savings. A homeowner who uses more electricity while the panels are producing may avoid more retail electricity purchases. A homeowner who exports more energy depends more heavily on the utility’s compensation for exported electricity.

How to improve the estimate

  • Use your actual annual electricity consumption from utility bills.
  • Use a production estimate appropriate for your location and system orientation.
  • Check your utility’s current rate structure.
  • Use the actual compensation available for exported solar energy.
  • Consider battery storage separately if it changes when you consume solar energy.
